Labradorite gets its name from the town of Labrador, in Canada, where the stone was discovered. According to native Canadian tribal lore, Labradorite is said to contain the Northern Lights, known as the Aurora Borealis. In the myth, it is believed that the lights were āset freeā by one of their ancestors who broke through the rocks with his spear. The lights that remained were set into stone, and thus Labradorite was born!
Named for its moon-like sheen, Moonstone is a Feldspar mineral exhibiting a soft, watery opaqueness and a silvery-white reflection called chatoyancy that moves as a line across the surface as light changes, hence the blue flash. Moonstone has been known and loved since ancient times. The Romans thought it was composed of frozen moonlight! In India they are often called ādream stonesā and tradition has it that wearing a moonstone to bed or placing one beneath a pillow will bring beautiful dreams. Throughout history they have been used extensively in jewelry making and today is no exception, it continues to be a very much loved stone!
